16-year-old Rio Ngumoha, fulfilling a long-held dream to play for Liverpool, made a remarkable debut by scoring in their 3-2 Premier League victory over Newcastle United at St James’s Park.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk lauded Ngumoha’s performance, calling it ‘a dream first appearance’ for the England youth international. Van Dijk praised the team’s patience and persistence, stating, ‘It is a dream of the first appearance for them. It is a good technique that we can remain patient and continue to assault to the end. We also try to find the right solution to score, and of course, we do it. I really praise Rio for helping us during this time.’
Ngumoha, who will turn 17 on August 29, now stands as one of the youngest Premier League goalscorers in history, joining an elite list that includes James Vaughan, James Milner, and Wayne Rooney.
Manager Arne Slot praised the 16-year-old’s goal, describing it as seizing a ‘great ball and a huge opportunity that is not easy to stop.’ The Dutch manager applauded Ngumoha’s confidence in scoring without pressure.
Liverpool’s next Premier League fixture is against Arsenal on August 31 at Anfield Stadium.
