Ruben Amorim believes Manchester United currently has no capacity to contribute to European level competition, citing the significant time needed for gameplay and effective competition strategies.
Manchester United finished 15th in the Premier League last season, marking their worst record in over a century. This period saw the team endure a campaign of losing awards and a disappointing Europa League run in May, which notably involved Tottenham Hotspur.
As the new season commenced, the Red Devils assumed the responsibility of competing in the UK without any European fixtures. Prior to their EFL Cup match against Grimsby Town, manager Ruben Amorim stated in a press conference that the squad has yet to secure a European title.
Amorim said: “I think we have no capacity to play in the European Awards. It’s my own feeling. We must be strong at the Champions League rather than the Premier League match; it’s more than anything else. We need time to develop the game system to be good in groups.”
The Portuguese manager also emphasized: “The players must compete against the first 11 options, and everything could change when they work hard for this group.”
United started the Premier League season with a 1-0 loss to Arsenal on opening day. Despite this, some fans felt a unique sense of hope for United’s future ability to control games and pressure opponents. However, in Week 2, a 1-1 draw against Fulham, coupled with a dip in play, raised questions among supporters.
Following that game, Amorim blamed the strong team’s issues, specifically mentioning ‘self-conversion’ and how, after taking a lead, they allowed opponents to score. The Portuguese manager urged his players to focus on new tournaments and strengthen their capacity for improvement.
