Thailand Projects $160 Million Economic Boost from Hosting 2025 SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games

Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MOTS) anticipates a significant economic impact, projecting earnings of approximately $160 million from its role as host for the upcoming 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and the 16th ASEAN Para Games. These prestigious multi-sport events, scheduled for late 2025 and early 2026, are also expected to be a major catalyst for job creation across the nation.

MOTS estimates that between 12,000 and 14,000 new jobs will be generated across various sectors, including service industries, construction, transportation, and sports-related fields. This surge in employment opportunities highlights the broad economic benefits anticipated from hosting such large-scale international competitions.

Mr. Atthakorn Sirilathayakorn, the Minister of Tourism and Sports, underscored the substantial international participation expected. He stated that the events are projected to attract no less than 12,000 athletes, coaches, and staff from countries across the region to Thailand. This considerable influx of visitors is set to drive significant economic activity and development in the designated host provinces, which include Bangkok, Songkhla, and Chonburi.

The total projected revenue of $160 million is anticipated to be generated from multiple diverse streams. Sponsorships are estimated to contribute $600,000, while the sale of goods and services, such as sports equipment and beverages, is expected to bring in $55 million. Registration fees for the SEA Games are projected to account for approximately $41 million, with an additional $510,000 anticipated from the Para Games registrations. Furthermore, ticket sales are forecasted to generate $600,000, and the sale of television broadcasting rights is expected to yield $20,000 per broadcasting institution.

To facilitate these major sporting events, Thai hosts plan to allocate approximately $63.5 million for their organization. This expenditure provides an interesting comparison with previous host nations; for example, Cambodia, which hosted the 32nd SEA Games in 2023 for the first time, incurred a total cost of about $131 million, notably offering free player registration and meals. In contrast, Vietnam spent approximately $44 million on the 31st SEA Games.

The 33rd SEA Games are officially scheduled to take place from December 9 to 20, 2025. Following this, the 16th ASEAN Para Games will be held from January 20 to 26, 2026, with Nakhon Ratchasima province specified as a key host location.
