WWE Legend John Cena Officially Retires After Illustrious 25-Year Career

After a remarkable career spanning nearly 25 years with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), legendary superstar John Cena has officially announced his retirement from in-ring competition. His final match took place on the night of December 13, 2025, at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., where he faced and was defeated by Gunther.

Following the conclusion of the match, WWE Hall of Famer and Chief Content Officer Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque entered the ring to acknowledge and congratulate Cena on his illustrious career. At 48 years old, Cena has long been regarded as one of the greatest and most recognizable athletes globally. He took a moment to bow to the appreciative fans, acknowledging their unwavering support over the past two and a half decades, and exited the arena to a resounding standing ovation.

Cena had initially indicated his plans to step away from active competition in July 2024, citing the significant physical toll wrestling had taken on his body. However, WWE has confirmed that while his in-ring career concludes, Cena will continue to be an integral part of the WWE family. He has signed a five-year contract to serve as a goodwill ambassador for the company, solidifying his ongoing legacy within the sport.

John Cena began his professional wrestling journey in 1999, subsequently joining WWE in 2000. By 2002, he made his impactful debut in the Advanced Tournament, quickly establishing a dominant reputation. Throughout his tenure, Cena achieved unparalleled success, winning numerous championships, including a record-setting 17 world titles, cementing his place in wrestling history.

Beyond the squared circle, Cena successfully transitioned into an acting career, beginning in 2006. He has garnered significant recognition for his performances in various television shows and blockbuster films, notably including ‘The Suicide Squad,’ ‘Fast & Furious 9,’ and ‘Fast X,’ showcasing his versatility and global appeal.
