PSG Wins First Super Cup, Coach Enrique: “We Didn’t Deserve It”

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) made history by winning their first-ever UEFA Super Cup title in 2025, defeating Tottenham Hotspur in a dramatic penalty shootout on August 13. However, despite the victory, PSG manager Luis Enrique surprisingly declared that his team “didn’t deserve” to win, according to ESPN.

The UEFA Super Cup final, held at Friuli Stadium in Udine, Italy, saw UEFA Champions League winners PSG face UEFA Europa League champions Tottenham. Under manager Thomas Frank, Tottenham initially took a commanding two-goal lead by the early second half. PSG, however, staged a remarkable comeback, scoring in the 85th and 90+4 minutes to force a penalty shootout. PSG ultimately secured the trophy with a 4-3 victory in the shootout, making them the first French club to ever win this title.

Enrique attributed his controversial assessment to the team’s lack of preparation. He explained that PSG had very little time to train for the Super Cup, having recently lost 3-0 to Chelsea in the FIFA Club World Cup final the previous month.

The 55-year-old Spanish coach told TNT Sports, “For 80 minutes, we didn’t deserve the victory. I believe Tottenham deserved to win because they played well; they had six weeks of training. In contrast, we only trained for six days. But sometimes, football is unfair. I must admit we were very lucky in the last 10 minutes to score two goals.”

The former Barcelona and Spain national team manager added, “All my players believed until the last minute, just like our fans.”
