Hanoi, Vietnam – The official groundbreaking ceremony for the Trong Dong Stadium has taken place in Hanoi, Vietnam, marking the commencement of a monumental project set to culminate in the world’s largest stadium. This ambitious facility is designed to accommodate a staggering 135,000 spectators and will be developed across an expansive 73.3-hectare site within the bustling Vietnamese capital.
The colossal undertaking is slated for completion in August 2028. It forms an integral part of the broader Olympic Sports Urban Area investment and construction project, which spans over 9,171 hectares. The total investment for this comprehensive urban development is estimated at 925 trillion Vietnamese Dong, equivalent to approximately 35 billion US dollars.
Upon its projected completion, Trong Dong Stadium is set to eclipse existing record-holders for stadium capacity. It will surpass North Korea’s Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, which currently holds 114,000 spectators, and India’s Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, with a capacity of 132,000. This achievement will firmly establish Trong Dong Stadium as the largest spectator venue globally.
Through this landmark project, Vietnam aims to significantly elevate its national sports capabilities and enhance its prospects of hosting major international events. The stadium’s design and research have been meticulously carried out to meet the stringent standards set by global sports governing bodies, including the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the Olympic Council of Asia, and other international sports organizations. This strategic alignment is intended to lay the groundwork for Vietnam to host prestigious competitions such as the Asian Games, the Olympic Games, and even the FIFA World Cup.
