The manager of Manchester United, Ruben Amorim, has definitively stated that the club has no intention of acquiring new players when the January transfer window officially opens. Amorim expressed unwavering confidence in his current squad, even as the team actively competes for a coveted UEFA Champions League qualification spot.
Manchester United is preparing for a crucial away fixture against Leeds United on January 4th. Currently positioned 6th in the Premier League table, a victory against 16th-placed Leeds could see them ascend to 4th place. However, a draw or a defeat would jeopardize their opportunity to break into the top four standings.
The team has recently faced significant squad challenges, grappling with numerous injuries to key players. Additionally, some members of the squad are currently away on international duty, representing their national teams at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament. Manchester United presently sits just three points behind 4th-placed Liverpool and one point below Chelsea, who are in 5th position, highlighting the competitive nature of their league campaign.
When questioned by reporters about potential new signings during the mid-season transfer window, Amorim was unequivocal in his response. He stated, ‘We haven’t had any discussions about changing the squad right now. We are currently in a phase of team development and it requires us to continue adhering to our existing plan. We are drawing closer to the Champions League qualification zone. However, we are also closely pursued by approximately eight other teams, so our primary focus must remain solely on the upcoming matches.’
Amorim further emphasized that no players within the current squad are expected to depart, despite reported interest from several Italian clubs. The squad’s depth has been tested, particularly in defense, with key players such as Harry Maguire and Matthijs De Ligt sidelined due to injuries. In midfield, both Kobbie Mainoo and captain Bruno Fernandes are also reportedly dealing with injuries, making their return dates uncertain.
For the upcoming match against Leeds United, the 40-year-old manager is anticipated to field a lineup similar to the one that secured a 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the previous week. Players like Noussair Mazraoui, Bryan Mbuemo, and Amad Diallo are among those currently unavailable, having joined their respective national teams for the AFCON tournament.
