Manchester United has officially announced the termination of manager Amorim’s contract on January 5, following a disappointing 1-1 draw against Leeds United in a recent Premier League fixture. The club confirmed that former Manchester United player Darren Fletcher has been appointed to immediately take over the managerial reins.
Amorim’s position had come under intense scrutiny and heavy criticism in recent weeks due to the team’s inconsistent performance. The Portuguese manager’s final five matches saw the club register only one victory, alongside three losses and one draw, highlighting a significant dip in form. Currently, Manchester United sits in sixth place in the Premier League standings, having accumulated 31 points from 20 games, which includes eight wins, seven draws, and five defeats.
According to the official club announcement, Amorim’s tenure at Old Trafford lasted for a period of 14 months. Darren Fletcher is now set to lead the team for their upcoming English Premier League match against Burnley, which is scheduled for the night of January 7.
Amorim, 40 years old, was initially appointed as Manchester United’s manager in November 2024, stepping in to replace Erik ten Hag. He had joined the English giants from Sporting CP. His inaugural season at Old Trafford proved to be a challenging one, with the team ultimately finishing 15th in the Premier League table for the 2024-25 season and suffering a defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the final of the UEFA Europa League.
