Karim Benzema, the distinguished French forward and 2022 Ballon d’Or winner, has reportedly refused to participate in Al Ittihad’s recent Saudi Pro League match. His decision came after the club presented him with a surprising new contract offer that notably excluded a traditional salary component, instead proposing compensation solely based on image rights.
This contractual dispute led to Benzema’s absence from the squad for the January 30, 2026, fixture against Al Fateh, which ultimately concluded in a 2-2 draw. Despite being listed on the team sheet prior to the game, the 38-year-old forward did not feature, sparking considerable speculation and concern among fans regarding his unexpected non-appearance.
Sources close to Benzema have indicated that the player views the proposed new contract as disrespectful, especially given his significant contributions and dedication since joining the club. His current agreement with the Saudi Arabian powerhouse is set to expire in June 2026.
The situation surrounding the new contract has been unfolding for some time. Al Ittihad had reportedly pledged to offer the former Real Madrid star an extension during the early part of the 2025-26 transfer window. However, the discussions remained dormant until January 29, 2026, just a day before the Al Fateh match and close to the transfer deadline, when club leadership finally presented the new terms.
The proposal, which some reports suggest was put forward by Al Ittihad President Michael Emenalo, outlined a compensation structure where Benzema would not receive a fixed salary, unlike his initial agreement. Instead, his earnings would be derived exclusively from the commercial utilization of his image rights. This unconventional offer has been widely interpreted as the core reason for Benzema’s profound dissatisfaction.
It is understood that Benzema has communicated his firm stance to the club, asserting that he will not return to the pitch until Al Ittihad presents a more favorable and respectful contract offer. Since his arrival at the Saudi club in 2023, Benzema has been one of the highest-earning players in the league, with an annual salary reported to be around $108 million, placing him second only to football icon Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of remuneration within Saudi football. This substantial earning history further underlines his perceived lack of respect from the club’s latest offer.
