Manchester United is reportedly facing a substantial compensation payment of approximately £15.9 million (around $21.5 million) to former manager Ruben Amorim and his coaching staff following their dismissal in early January. This significant financial outlay underscores the ongoing costs associated with managerial changes at top-tier football clubs.
Amorim’s tenure at Old Trafford concluded on January 5th, ending a relatively brief 14-month period at the helm of the Red Devils. Alongside the Portuguese manager, his five-member coaching team also departed the club as part of the management overhaul.
Initially, reports from publications like the Daily Mail suggested a compensation figure for Amorim alone closer to £10 million (approximately $13.5 million). However, more recent documents submitted to the New York Stock Exchange have indicated that the total cost for the dismissal of Amorim and his entire team could reach nearly £15.6 million (around $21.5 million). This figure accounts for the financial obligations from his arrival at the Carrington training ground through to his termination by Football Director Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada.
Ruben Amorim’s overall financial commitment, encompassing both his recruitment and subsequent dismissal, has now reportedly amassed close to £27 million (around $36.4 million) for Manchester United. The club initially secured Amorim from Sporting Lisbon in October 2024, an acquisition that cost approximately £8.3 million (around $11 million) to terminate his existing contract. Additionally, a further payment of nearly £900,000 (about $1.2 million) was made to facilitate his swift integration into the Manchester United setup. Amorim had also signed a contract to manage the team until 2027, valued at £6.5 million (around $8.7 million) per year, which would have seen him earn in excess of £10.05 million (over $13.4 million) had he completed his initial term.
This latest payout contributes to a broader trend of significant expenditure on compensation for departing personnel at Manchester United. In the 15 months preceding Amorim’s departure, the club had already paid approximately £14.5 million (around $19.5 million) in compensation to former manager Erik Ten Hag and for the exit of Sports Director Dan Ashworth. Consequently, the total sum spent by the Red Devils on various coaching and departmental dismissals over this period could approach £30 million (roughly $40 million).
The decision to dismiss Amorim reportedly stemmed from comments he made during a post-match press conference following Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Leeds United. His remarks were perceived as critical of the club’s leadership, leading to his departure just one day later.
During his tenure, the Portuguese manager oversaw 63 matches for the English football giant, achieving only 25 victories. Under his leadership, Manchester United concluded the 2024-25 Premier League season in 15th place and suffered a defeat in the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur.
