AFC Sanctions End Malaysia’s 2027 Asian Cup Journey Over Player Eligibility Violations

The Malaysian national football team’s aspirations of qualifying for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup have been definitively ended following severe sanctions imposed by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). These penalties against the Malaysian Football Federation (FAM) stem from the improper use of foreign players who did not possess valid citizenship rights, a direct breach of eligibility regulations.

The AFC’s disciplinary action involved the disqualification of Malaysian players from two crucial victories in Group F of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers. Specifically, Malaysia’s initial 3-0 win over Nepal and their 2-0 triumph against Vietnam have both been overturned. The Asian governing body has officially awarded 3-0 default victories to both Nepal and Vietnam in these respective matches.

This significant ruling has drastically altered the standings in Group F. Prior to the sanctions, Malaysia had secured 9 points, but with the deduction of 6 points from these two now-voided matches, their total plummeted. This effectively concludes their qualification hopes. Consequently, Vietnam has benefited from the ruling, securing the final qualification spot in Saudi Arabia by finishing in first place with 15 points. With only one game left in Group F, where Vietnam is scheduled to host Malaysia and Nepal to welcome Laos on March 31, the outcome of these remaining matches will now have no bearing on Malaysia’s elimination.

The AFC sanctions, formally imposed on March 17, were a direct result of a final verdict issued by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). This verdict pertained to a scandal involving the FAM, which was found to have used fraudulent documents to obtain passports for seven players, thereby granting them illegitimate eligibility to represent the Malaysian national team. The CAS ruling partially upheld sanctions originally supported by the International Football Association (FIFA) concerning these seven players. The individuals identified in the case include Gabriel Palmero, Facundo Garcés, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, João Figueiredo, Hector Hevel, and Jon Irazábal.
