Former Japan Star Keisuke Honda Joins Singapore’s FC Jurong, Eyes Historic Guinness Record

Keisuke Honda, the revered former Japan international and coach of the Cambodian national football team, has officially signed a playing contract with FC Jurong in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) for the upcoming season. This move marks another significant chapter in the distinguished career of the 39-year-old midfielder, who is set to turn 40 in June 2026.

Honda’s decision to join the Southeast Asian club is driven by a unique ambition: to establish a new Guinness World Record. He aims to become the player who has scored in the highest number of different top-flight leagues globally. This pursuit highlights his enduring passion for the game and his desire to constantly seek new challenges, even as he approaches a significant milestone in his playing career.

Expressing his enthusiasm for this new venture, Honda stated, “I am very happy to have the opportunity to continue my football career in a top league. As I will turn 40 in 2026, I want to find many new challenges, including the Guinness World Record for scoring in the most different top football leagues.” Beyond the record, Honda also articulated his strong desire to help FC Jurong clinch the SPL championship title.

Throughout his illustrious career, Honda has left an indelible mark on the international stage, representing Japan in 98 matches and scoring 38 goals. He was a key figure for the Samurai Blue in three FIFA World Cups, participating in the 2010, 2014, and 2018 tournaments. His club career has seen him play across numerous countries, including Japan, Italy (notably with AC Milan), the Netherlands, Russia (where he played for CSKA Moscow), Brazil, and Portugal, providing a strong foundation for his current record attempt.

Beyond his playing exploits, Honda also served as the general manager and head coach for the Cambodian national team from 2018 to 2023. His tenure included leading the Kouprey White during the 32nd SEA Games, which Cambodia hosted for the first time in its history. This dual role as player and coach simultaneously underscored his deep commitment to football development. His arrival at FC Jurong is expected to bring significant attention and experience to the Singapore Premier League.
