The upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup has already generated unprecedented global interest, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino announcing a staggering figure of over 500 million ticket requests. This remarkable demand sets a new record for the football governing body, far surpassing previous tournaments and highlighting the immense anticipation for the event.
This 2026 edition marks a significant expansion for the World Cup, as it will be the first to feature 48 participating teams. The tournament is set to be jointly hosted across three North American nations: the United States, Canada, and Mexico, promising a wide geographical reach and diverse host cities.
Speaking at the FIFA Congress in Vancouver on April 30th, President Infantino underscored the extraordinary scale of public interest. He stated, “We have heard a lot of talk about tickets for this World Cup. We have up to 500 million requests for World Cup tickets.” He further emphasized the unprecedented nature of this demand by noting that previous World Cups typically generated just over 50 million ticket requests, making the current figure a tenfold increase.
While the immense demand underscores the tournament’s global appeal, it also brings into focus ongoing concerns regarding ticket pricing and accessibility for fans, particularly those residing in the host countries. The issue of tickets being sold at sky-high prices by brokers has become a significant point of contention between supporters and FIFA.
President Infantino acknowledged that some tickets might be very expensive, reflecting the premium nature of certain high-profile matches. However, he also assured that other match tickets would be reasonably priced, aiming to keep them accessible for a broader fan base. FIFA is expected to continue its phased ticket sales strategy, which often sees prices adjusted based on demand. This approach is part of the organization’s broader efforts to maximize revenue from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, recognizing it as the largest and most inclusive tournament in its history.
