FC Barcelona finds itself on the cusp of a remarkable achievement, poised to secure its second consecutive Spanish La Liga title. A crucial 2-1 victory over Osasuna, thanks to goals from star striker Robert Lewandowski and winger Ferran Torres, has brought the Catalan giants within touching distance of the championship.
With just four matches remaining in their campaign, Barcelona currently sits atop the La Liga standings with a commanding 88 points. This impressive tally gives them a substantial 14-point lead over second-placed Real Madrid. Consequently, the Catalan club requires only one more victory from their upcoming fixtures to definitively clinch the La Liga title, securing it for a second consecutive season. Their next opportunity to achieve this milestone comes on April 10, when they face rivals Espanyol, a match that could determine whether they celebrate the championship early or defer the decision to a subsequent game.
The victory against Osasuna, however, was far from straightforward. The match remained a tense, goalless stalemate for over 80 minutes, with both teams struggling to break the deadlock. It was Barcelona’s prolific striker, Robert Lewandowski, who finally pierced Osasuna’s defense in the 81st minute. He netted the opening goal with a powerful header, converting a well-placed cross into the opposition’s penalty area.
Just five minutes after Lewandowski’s opener, Ferran Torres doubled Barcelona’s advantage. Torres capitalized on a precise pass from Fermin Lopez, calmly slotting the ball home to extend his team’s lead. Osasuna managed to pull one goal back late in the game, courtesy of Raul Garcia, but it was not enough to prevent a Barcelona victory.
Following the match, goal-scorer Ferran Torres spoke to DAZN, emphasizing the significant pressure Barcelona’s victory placed on their closest rivals, Real Madrid. ‘We are putting pressure on Real Madrid,’ Torres stated. ‘If they do not win tomorrow, we will be the champion team. Today’s match was particularly tense in La Liga, and these three points feel truly invaluable, worth more than what we typically get.’ He further commended his team’s effort, adding, ‘I think the team really showed a very good performance.’
This potential back-to-back triumph follows last season’s success, where Barcelona also claimed their 28th Spanish top-flight league title after navigating a challenging season, once again overcoming fierce competition from Real Madrid.
