Morocco’s national football team coach, Mohamed Ouahbi, has officially unveiled the 26-player squad set to represent the nation at the FIFA World Cup 2026 in North America. The selection, announced on May 26, signals a strong emphasis on continuity, with a significant number of players from the historic 2022 World Cup campaign making the cut.
The decision to retain much of the core squad reflects Morocco’s confidence in the team that captivated the world in Qatar. In 2022, Morocco etched its name in football history by becoming the first African nation ever to reach the semi-finals of a FIFA World Cup, ultimately securing a commendable fourth-place finish.
Key figures from that groundbreaking squad who have been named for 2026 include goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, stalwart defenders Nayef Aguerd and Achraf Hakimi – widely regarded as one of the best right-backs in the sport – alongside influential midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.
Coach Ouahbi conveyed his belief in the selected group, describing it as a team brimming with undeniable talent and ability. He acknowledged the logistical challenges some players based internationally have faced regarding consistent full training participation, yet expressed confidence in their readiness and commitment.
In a strategic move blending experience with promising youth, the squad also features 18-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi. The talented youngster, who has impressed with French club Lille, is poised to make his World Cup debut in 2026, representing the next generation of Moroccan football.
