FIFA Upholds Olise Yellow Card: France’s Appeal Rejected Ahead of World Cup Quarter-Final

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has officially rejected the appeal filed by the French Football Federation (FFF) regarding a yellow card issued to midfielder Michael Olise during France’s Round of 16 match against Paraguay in the ongoing World Cup 2026. The decision was confirmed by French national team coach Didier Deschamps.

During the intensely contested Round of 16 encounter, where France secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Paraguay, Olise, who plays for Bayern Munich, received a yellow card. The incident involved a challenge on Paraguay’s Matias Galarza, who fell to the ground. However, replays of the video footage suggested that the 24-year-old midfielder had merely pulled the Paraguayan player’s shirt, leading the FFF to argue that the disciplinary action was unduly harsh.

France’s decision to appeal to FIFA was notably influenced by a prior surprising ruling from the international governing body. Earlier in the tournament, FIFA had overturned a red card initially given to American player Folarin Balogun before his team’s Round of 16 clash against Belgium, setting a precedent that the FFF believed supported their case for Olise.

However, speaking at a press conference, coach Deschamps revealed that FIFA had chosen to dismiss the FFF’s appeal. This means the yellow card issued to Olise stands, and he will remain at risk of suspension. Should he receive another yellow card in France’s upcoming quarter-final match against Morocco, he would be ineligible to participate in a potential semi-final fixture.

Deschamps explicitly confirmed the outcome, stating, “There has been no change to Olise’s situation. We received FIFA’s official information this morning, July 8, confirming that the yellow card for Olise remains valid.” The 57-year-old coach reiterated that the team must now move forward with this decision.

The match against Paraguay was fraught with multiple challenges for the French squad. Beyond the contentious yellow card for the 24-year-old winger Olise, midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni sustained an injury, and star forward Kylian Mbappé was involved in a controversial incident, facing accusations of racial discrimination concerning the Speaker of the Paraguayan Parliament. Despite these distractions, Deschamps affirmed that these issues would not negatively impact the team’s preparations or performance in the quarter-final against Morocco.

The coach, who led France to victory in the 2018 World Cup, reassured the public that all three players—Olise, Tchouaméni, and Mbappé—are currently in stable condition and are thoroughly preparing for the quarter-final match. The crucial encounter is scheduled to take place at a stadium in Houston.
