Egypt’s national football team coach, Hossam Hassan, has voiced strong accusations regarding his side’s recent defeat to Argentina in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16. Hassan claims that Egypt’s elimination was ‘unfair,’ suggesting that the tournament organizers had an vested interest in ensuring Argentina and superstar Lionel Messi remained in the competition for marketing purposes.
Following Egypt’s narrow 3-2 loss to the South American giants, Hassan was critical of French referee Francois Letexier, attributing the match’s outcome to factors beyond pure sporting merit. He characterized the result as a ‘market effect,’ implying that commercial considerations superseded fair play.
“Egypt has failed unjustly,” Hassan stated after the match. “There is support for world champions everywhere, especially marketing support. They want the defending champions to be present at the event. They want Messi to continue.” The coach reiterated his belief to reporters that despite Egypt’s strong performance, external influences played a significant role in the final score.
Echoing his coach’s sentiments, Egyptian striker Mostafa Zico also lambasted the officiating. Zico described the referee’s performance as “very unfair” and asserted that the decisions ultimately “destroyed the efforts of an entire nation.” He added, “From the beginning of the match, he was biased against us. This event is pre-determined and gone.”
Zico, who is 29 years old, scored one goal during the match but also had another potential goal disallowed by the referee. He conveyed his apologies to Egyptian supporters for the team’s failure to advance, acknowledging the nation’s high expectations.
The match itself saw Argentina secure a 3-2 victory, but not without a fight. Egypt had initially established a commanding two-goal lead. However, Argentina mounted a late comeback, with defender Cristian Romero scoring in the 79th minute, followed by captain Lionel Messi’s equalizer in the 83rd minute. Enzo Fernandez then sealed the win with a decisive goal in the 90+2 minute of extra time, sending Argentina through to the quarterfinals. Argentina is now scheduled to face Switzerland in their pursuit of a semi-final spot on July 12.
