Ukrainian football giants Shakhtar Donetsk have officially announced that they will utilize Chelsea’s iconic Stamford Bridge stadium as their temporary home ground for the upcoming 2026-27 UEFA Champions League season. This significant agreement, allowing the club to host its European fixtures in London, was jointly confirmed by both clubs on August 21, marking a new chapter for Shakhtar in their continental campaign.
The decision to relocate their home matches stems from the ongoing inability of the Ukrainian champions to use their primary venue, the Donbas Arena. This situation has persisted since Russian forces initiated their incursion into the Donbas region, initially in 2014 and further escalating in 2022. Consequently, Shakhtar Donetsk has been forced to play their home fixtures away from Donetsk for an extended period, historically making use of stadiums in Ukrainian cities such as Kyiv and Lviv. Furthermore, UEFA regulations mandate that Champions League matches involving Ukrainian clubs must be held in designated neutral venues, which have previously included cities like Hamburg, Warsaw, Gelsenkirchen, Krakow, and Ljubljana.
An interesting aspect of this arrangement is that Chelsea, the host club, will not be participating in the UEFA Champions League themselves during the 2026-27 season, having concluded the previous Premier League campaign in 10th position. This absence from European football’s elite competition likely facilitated the availability of Stamford Bridge for Shakhtar.
