Bolivian authorities have successfully intercepted a bus elaborately disguised as the official team transport for Brazil’s Sao Paulo Futebol Clube, leading to the significant seizure of over 86.5 kilograms of marijuana and the arrest of three individuals suspected of drug trafficking. The sophisticated operation uncovered a substantial amount of illicit substances, highlighting a notable attempt to evade detection using a well-known sports identity.
The dramatic bust took place in Villa Tunari, Bolivia, where drug police acted on intelligence to stop the suspicious vehicle. During a thorough search, law enforcement officers discovered numerous sealed packages believed to contain illegal substances. This development was initially reported by the prominent French newspaper L’Equipe, bringing international attention to the incident.
The bus itself was meticulously decorated and painted to replicate the genuine team bus of Sao Paulo FC, a celebrated club in the Brazilian top league. Large, recognizable club logos were prominently displayed on the front and sides of the vehicle, creating a convincing facade designed to mimic official sports travel.
Adding a layer of unusual timing to the event, the interception by Bolivian authorities occurred on a night when the actual Sao Paulo FC team was in Bolivia, actively preparing for a Copa Sudamericana match. This coincidence underscored the audacity of the traffickers’ scheme to impersonate a legitimate football entity during a period of heightened activity for the club in the region.
Upon stopping the bus, police personnel systematically searched the interior, where they located 65 distinct, sealed rectangular packages. These packages were cleverly concealed within three large handbags. Subsequent forensic analysis by Bolivian police confirmed that the entire contents of these packages amounted to 86.5 kilograms of marijuana, reinforcing the scale of the drug operation.
Following the news of the seizure, Sao Paulo Football Club promptly released a statement to unequivocally distance themselves from the incident. The club vehemently denied any connection to the impounded bus, asserting that the vehicle stopped by Bolivian police was not part of their official fleet and had no affiliation whatsoever with their organization or players.
Furthermore, Cosmos Company, an entity known for bus operations, also issued a denial of any contact or association with the camouflaged bus. They reiterated that the vehicle, despite its Sao Paulo FC-themed paint job, was not operated by or linked to the Brazilian football giants. Cosmos Company explicitly stated that the bus driver implicated in the Bolivian drug trafficking case would be held personally accountable for their involvement in the illegal activity.
