Chinese long-distance runner Li Shuangyong has officially etched his name into the history books, earning a Guinness World Record for an extraordinary feat of endurance. Li successfully completed a full marathon distance of 42.195 kilometers for an astonishing 372 consecutive days, a testament to his remarkable determination and physical resilience. The 41-year-old from Shandong province, China, emphasizes that this record will not deter him from continuing his daily long-distance runs.
Li’s remarkable journey into running began in 2021, a period marked by significant personal challenges. After facing severe setbacks in his business ventures and the subsequent dissolution of his marriage, Li turned to running as a means of coping and rebuilding. What started as a regular form of exercise gradually evolved into a profound passion and a life-altering mission.
Over the past year, Li decided to transform his daily runs into a grand personal challenge, aiming to traverse various cities across China’s provinces. After four years of dedicated running and studying the sport, he made the ambitious decision to undertake a full marathon distance every single day. His epic odyssey commenced in Heze, Shandong province, and has, to date, seen him cover over 300 cities and accumulate a staggering total distance exceeding 15,000 kilometers within those 372 days.
During his continuous running adventure, Li also participated in several official marathon events held in cities such as Suizhou, Changsha, Hangzhou, and Nanjing, among others. Reflecting on his journey, Li shared his philosophy, stating, “I have been running for five years now. Everyone has the opportunity to achieve great things. The first condition is to make a decision, set a goal, and keep the dream alive. As long as you keep doing it, you will realize that you are an extraordinary person. I also want to show through this activity that we can all do amazing things.”
Li’s incredible streak was officially recognized by Guinness World Records on August 9, during a ceremony held in Jinan, Shandong province. In doing so, he surpassed the previous record held by Brazilian athlete Hugo Farias, which was set in 2023. Li initially broke Farias’s record while running in Xinjiang province and continued his streak until reaching the designated completion point in Shandong.
Such an intense daily regimen, naturally, presented immense physical and mental hurdles. Li openly acknowledges that his journey was not without its difficulties. On days when muscle soreness became particularly severe, the 41-year-old would briefly pause his run to seek out massage services, allowing his muscles and tendons to recover before resuming his relentless pace.
Meticulous preparation has been crucial to his sustained performance. Li ensures he is well-equipped with essential supplies, including healthy snacks, pure water, and various hydration drinks to support his body throughout his extensive runs. He attributes his robust health to these precautions and his diligent attention to his running pace, which he typically maintains between 5 to 7 minutes per kilometer. Consistently, he completes each daily marathon within an impressive timeframe of five to six hours.
For Li Shuangyong, the Guinness World Record is not the ultimate destination but rather a significant milestone in his ongoing quest. His overarching ambition is to run through a total of 520 cities across China, a monumental endeavor that includes the challenging high-altitude terrain of Lhasa, Tibet. Li’s story stands as a powerful testament to the human spirit’s capacity for endurance and the pursuit of extraordinary goals.
