A tragic incident has profoundly shaken the Thai football community, following the death of midfielder Sofwan Awa of Yala FC. The player, who competed in Thai League 3, passed away after being struck by lightning during a GOLOK FA Cup match.
The unfortunate event occurred on the evening of August 4, 2026, at Santiphap Stadium, located in the Sungai Kolok district of Narathiwat province. During the match, a sudden and powerful lightning strike caused several players to collapse on the field, resulting in widespread alarm.
Emergency services were immediately called to the scene, and three players who had been critically affected were swiftly rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention. Regrettably, Sofwan Awa had sustained the most severe injuries from the lightning strike, and despite efforts, he was later pronounced dead at approximately 6:40 PM.
The devastating news was confirmed by his club, Yala FC, which promptly posted a heartfelt message on its official Facebook account. The club expressed profound sorrow and extended its deepest condolences to the player’s grieving family, acknowledging the immense loss.
Following the incident, the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) also released an official statement. The association acknowledged the devastating nature of the event and joined in extending its deepest sympathies to Sofwan Awa’s family, friends, and his club during this incredibly difficult time.
Sofwan Awa had only recently joined Yala FC, having signed his contract on July 29, 2026. The talented winger was a significant and impactful asset to his previous team, Pattani FC, where he demonstrated his skill by scoring 7 goals in 18 appearances.
