Nine Arrested in Singapore for Basketball Match-Fixing

Nine individuals have been arrested in Singapore on suspicion of basketball match-fixing. The arrests, announced by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) on August 19, involve eight Singaporeans and one permanent resident, aged between 19 and 35.

The CPIB also revealed that one of the suspects is a basketball player from the K. Star National Basketball League Division. All nine are currently under investigation for offenses under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The CPIB reiterated Singapore’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption, stating, “We are strictly against corruption. The preparation of the outcome in every match is not waived in Singapore.” They emphasized their commitment to taking strict action against any individuals involved in giving or receiving bribes to fix competition outcomes.

The specific match under suspicion is between the Tagawa and Tong Whye basketball teams, played on August 1st, where Tagawa won 66-43.

The K. Star National Basketball League, which began on July 14 and is scheduled to end on August 30, features 10 teams: Adroit, SBA, Tagawa, Chongawee, Chong Ghee, Eng Tat Horns, SG Basketball, Siglap Basketball Club, Xin Hua, Tung San, and Tong Whye.
