Gianni Infantino, the current President of football’s global governing body, FIFA, has officially confirmed his intention to seek re-election for a fourth term. His candidacy will be put to a vote during the FIFA Presidential election, which is scheduled to take place in March 2027. This decision comes despite significant and ongoing pressure from several key member federations, most notably the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).
The confirmation of Infantino’s bid was officially issued by FIFA on September 6th. This statement served to clarify earlier speculation that the Swiss national might abandon his re-election plans. Rumors had widely circulated regarding his potential withdrawal, largely fueled by a controversial proposal involving the sale of stakes in FIFA competitions to private investors.
Addressing these concerns directly, a FIFA spokesperson conveyed the organization’s stance to the press, stating: “The FIFA President announced in April that he would run for another term in 2027. Indeed, nothing has changed. He will still run.” This statement unequivocally reiterates Infantino’s commitment to continuing his leadership role at the helm of international football.
The upcoming presidential election is formally scheduled to take place on March 18, 2027, in the city of Rabat, Morocco. Prospective candidates who wish to challenge Infantino for the presidency must formally declare their intentions to run by November 18 of the current year.
Should Infantino secure another term in office, he would continue to lead FIFA until 2031. The 56-year-old Swiss national first assumed the presidency in 2016, following his election to succeed Sepp Blatter. While his initial tenure involved completing the remainder of Blatter’s term, his current period in office is officially recognized as his third full term, underscoring his established and continued presence as a prominent figure in global football governance.
