The 20th Asian Games, set to take place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4, 2026, is already generating significant anticipation across Southeast Asia. Nations in the region are preparing to send robust delegations, with several countries announcing substantial contingents of athletes and officials. Thailand, in particular, is leading the pack with the largest reported delegation, approaching nearly 1,000 participants.
The Philippines is preparing for a landmark participation, assembling its largest delegation for the Asian Games since 1994. The contingent will comprise almost 700 individuals, including 443 dedicated athletes. These athletes are slated to compete across 38 distinct sports categories, chosen from the 47 disciplines offered by the host nation, Japan.
Indonesia is also demonstrating a strong commitment to the Games, planning to send a total delegation of 580 members. This includes 432 athletes, who will be supported by 148 officials, coaches, and support staff. The Indonesian team is set to compete in 35 sports, primarily focusing on disciplines where they have high potential for success. Notably, the national men’s volleyball team, which recently competed in international friendly matches in Cambodia, is expected to be part of this formidable contingent.
Malaysia’s delegation for the Aichi-Nagoya Games will consist of 523 individuals. This includes 347 athletes and 176 officials. The athletes will represent Malaysia across 28 sports categories. It has been observed that the majority of Malaysia’s athletic representation will be male, with 41 female athletes also confirmed to compete.
Neighboring Vietnam is set to dispatch a significant delegation of 498 members to the 20th Asian Games. Their contingent will participate in 17 specific sports categories.
Cambodia is also preparing its national team, with approximately 100 delegates confirmed to compete in 13 sports. Meanwhile, Singapore is expected to send a substantial delegation of over 300 individuals to the multi-sport event.
While many Southeast Asian nations have already finalized or announced preliminary figures for their Asian Games delegations, several others are yet to declare their official contingents. Countries such as Laos, East Timor, Myanmar, and Brunei are anticipated to release their participation details in due course, further solidifying the region’s strong presence at the upcoming prestigious continental event.
