Japanese athlete Hojo Takumi has made history by securing the very first gold medal of the 20th Asian Games 2026. Competing in the men’s singles triathlon event, held on September 20, 2026, in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan, Takumi’s decisive victory also earned him a coveted qualification spot for the upcoming 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, USA.
The 30-year-old triathlete demonstrated remarkable endurance and speed, completing the challenging course in an impressive 52 minutes and 56 seconds. He finished a strong nine seconds ahead of China’s Zhang Xirui, who secured the silver medal. The bronze medal was awarded to Arlan Zhanabay of Kazakhstan, completing the podium in the inaugural medal event of the Games.
Following his significant win, Hojo Takumi expressed both personal relief and a broader vision for his sport. Having previously missed out on competing in the last two Olympic Games, he reflected on the profound meaning of this victory: “When I learned this would be the first gold medal of the event, I immediately recognized it as an unparalleled opportunity to promote triathlon and elevate its prominence within Japan. Personally, it was deeply disappointing to miss Tokyo and Paris. This Asian Games victory presents a fantastic opportunity to look forward to the Los Angeles Games.”
The 20th Asian Games officially commenced on September 19, 2026, and is scheduled to conclude on October 4, 2026. The prestigious multi-sport event is set to welcome over 11,000 athletes from across Asia, who will compete for a total of 369 gold medals across an extensive program of up to 43 different sports. Among the participating nations, Cambodia has dispatched a delegation of 106 athletes, who are competing across 14 sports categories.
