Lionel Messi Honored with Spain’s Esteemed Princess of Asturias Award

Renowned footballer Lionel Messi has been officially honored with Spain’s highest sports distinction, the Princess of Asturias Award. This prestigious accolade recognizes the Argentine superstar’s profound dedication not only to his extraordinary career in football but also to his significant contributions to social work, particularly his efforts in supporting underprivileged children to achieve better living standards, health, and education.

The celebrated footballer, whose nomination for this esteemed honor was first announced in June, has been lauded by the Princess of Asturias Award jury. They praised him as the most successful player in the history of football, alongside his commendable achievements in social causes. Established in 1981, the Princess of Asturias Award stands as one of the most prestigious global accolades in the Spanish-speaking world, accompanied by a substantial prize of 50,000 euros (approximately $56,000 USD).

Upon Messi’s arrival in Oviedo, the capital of Spain’s northern Asturias region, legions of enthusiastic fans gathered, chanting his name in a vibrant display of admiration for his return to Spanish soil. His reception was further distinguished by a ceremonial welcome from the Spanish Royal Guard band, preceding the formal award ceremony. The iconic player received his honor directly from King Felipe VI of Spain and Princess Leonor, the heir presumptive to the Spanish throne.

During the ceremony, Princess Leonor herself praised Messi for his uniquely brilliant career and his unparalleled ability to meticulously study each game, enabling him to craft spectacular moments within mere seconds on the field. Following the reception of this significant Spanish award, Messi shared a crucial insight, emphasizing that good conduct forms the essential foundation of football. The winner of the 2022 FIFA World Cup also took the opportunity, during a heartfelt meeting with children in Oviedo, to impart a valuable lesson: the importance of understanding how to graciously accept defeat and how to achieve victory in the sport.

Messi’s enduring legacy in Spain is deeply rooted in his 21-year tenure with FC Barcelona, where he was instrumental in leading the Spanish giants to numerous domestic and European championship titles.
