Chinese state broadcaster CCTV has reportedly suspended its broadcasts of Real Madrid matches and other La Liga fixtures. This decision follows controversial remarks made by star striker Kylian Mbappé, who reportedly referred to former Chinese leader Mao Zedong as a ‘dictator,’ sparking significant backlash.
The suspension notably impacted the recent La Liga Week 11 match on November 1, where Real Madrid secured a 3-0 victory over Racing Santander, with Mbappé contributing a goal. According to AFP news agency reports, the fixture was unavailable on both CCTV sports channels, and other La Liga matches have also ceased live broadcast. CCTV had previously issued a warning last week regarding its intent to cease broadcasting the Spanish league following the French captain’s comments, which caused considerable upset within China and among the global Chinese community.
Despite a public apology issued by Mbappé, Real Madrid, and the La Liga organizing committee for the 27-year-old striker’s remarks, CCTV’s management body maintained the suspension of the live broadcasts. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, however, confirmed that it had accepted the French striker’s apology, acknowledging it with ‘the utmost care.’
The fallout from Mbappé’s comments extended beyond broadcasting, impacting his commercial endorsements in China. Three major Chinese beverage companies — Dongpeng, Mengniu Dairy, and Milkground — each announced the termination of their commercial agreements with the football star. All companies explicitly stated their opposition to any statements or activities that could negatively affect the sentiments of the Chinese people.
In terms of league performance, Real Madrid, often nicknamed ‘The Emperors,’ currently sits third in La Liga after 11 games with 27 points. They are one point behind second-placed Atlético Madrid and three points adrift of league leaders Barcelona.
