Mexico City witnessed a historic moment on November 1st, as Kimi Antonelli officially secured the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship title. At an astonishing 20 years old, the Italian driver for Mercedes-AMG F1 has become the youngest world champion in the sport’s illustrious history, marking his first career World Championship title.
Antonelli’s remarkable achievement was solidified following his third-place finish in the 19th stage, the Mexico City Grand Prix. This podium finish pushed his total points tally to an unassailable 380, leaving his competitors mathematically unable to catch him with only four stages remaining in the 2026 season.
This triumph shatters the record previously held by German legend Sebastian Vettel, who became the youngest World Champion in 2010 at the age of 23. Furthermore, Antonelli’s victory holds profound historical significance for Italy, as he is the first Italian driver in 73 years to claim a Formula 1 world title, a feat last accomplished by the legendary Alberto Ascari in 1953.
As of the 19th stage, Kimi Antonelli leads the championship standings with a dominant 380 points. Trailing him in second place is Dutch driver Max Verstappen, who holds 261 points, while Sir Lewis Hamilton is in third position with 259 points.
The Formula 1 season is set to continue with its 20th round, the São Paulo Grand Prix, scheduled to take place in São Paulo from November 6th to 8th.
