Phnom Penh’s Former Airport Runway Becomes Unique Venue for Popular Kinal Fun Run

Phnom Penh, Cambodia – The Kinal Fun Run recently transformed the former runway of Phnom Penh International Airport (previously Pochentong Airport) into a vibrant and unique course, drawing significant participation and positive feedback from the running community. The event, held on the morning of October 29, saw over 1,500 local and international running enthusiasts converge for a 5-kilometer race.

Among the participants was Ms. Srey Roth from the Squad Run team, who expressed immense satisfaction with her experience. She highlighted the unparalleled safety and pleasant atmosphere provided by the old airport location, making it an ideal setting for such a recreational sports event. Srey Roth successfully completed the 5-kilometer distance in approximately 22 minutes, securing an impressive third-place finish. Her positive experience has led her to advocate for more similar events, particularly those utilizing distinctive and secure venues like the former airport.

Ms. Srey Roth’s journey into running began approximately eight months ago, initially as a casual way to exercise and enjoy herself. However, consistent daily training soon ignited a deep passion for the sport within her. Running evolved from a mere hobby into a dedicated pursuit, pushing her to overcome personal endurance challenges and strive for new personal bests in speed and time.

Looking ahead, Ms. Srey Roth is preparing to further her competitive experience by participating in the 5th National Sports Event, scheduled for November. She plans to compete in the 800-meter and 1,500-meter athletics categories, aiming to gain valuable insights and additional experience in both competitive racing and recreational running events.

The Kinal Fun Run, a collaborative effort between PPM (a pharmaceutical enterprise) and the Unity Run Club, was exclusively designed for a 5-kilometer distance. The event’s organizers emphasized the high level of safety and the exceptional environment offered by the former airport runway, which contributed significantly to the participants’ enjoyment. Each of the more than 1,500 participants received a race shirt, a commemorative medal, a bib number, a gift basket including prahok (Cambodian fermented fish paste), and Kinal muscle rub products, enhancing their overall experience at this memorable event.
