Chaos Reigns: 51 Red Cards Issued in Record-Breaking Brazilian Youth Match

A new and astonishing world record has been set in the realm of football, following an extraordinary and tumultuous match in Brazil’s Under-20 youth championship. In an unprecedented display of disciplinary action, a staggering 51 red cards were brandished by the referee during a single game, cementing its place in sporting history for all the wrong reasons.

The incident unfolded during the first leg of the Minas Gerais U20 Youth Championship semi-final, contested between Uberlandia and Mamore. What began as a crucial fixture quickly devolved into one of the most chaotic football matches ever witnessed. A total of 43 players and 8 technical staff members were dismissed from the field, leading to the staggering final tally of 51 red cards.

The eruption of violence occurred in the second half, shortly after Mamore took a commanding 3-1 lead. The catalyst for the chaos was Mamore player Davi, who reportedly taunted the opposing team’s substitutes on the bench while celebrating his side’s goal. This provocation sparked an immediate and furious reaction, with Uberlandia’s goalkeeper coach, Paulo Sergio Dias Dos Santos, rushing onto the pitch to confront Davi. This intervention swiftly escalated into a full-blown brawl, engulfing players and officials from both teams in a widespread altercation.

The intensity of the conflict was so severe that Brazilian media outlet O Tempo reported the intervention of both police and military personnel. The damage inflicted upon the Parque do Sabia stadium was extensive, with police confirming that doors, showers, windows, team benches, tables, and other seating arrangements were left completely destroyed in the aftermath of the melee.

Referee Fernando Patrick Drosghic Modesto was compelled to suspend the match for approximately 40 minutes as authorities attempted to restore order and assess the situation. Ultimately, due to the sheer scale of the damage and the inability to ensure player safety, the referee made the decision to abandon the game entirely.

This remarkable event now stands as the new world record for the most red cards issued in a single football match. It surpasses the previous record of 36 red cards, which occurred during a fifth-division Argentinian league match in 2011 between Club Atletico Claypole and Victoriano Arenas.

In the wake of this extraordinary confrontation, Uberlandia announced its decision to forfeit the second leg of the Minas Gerais U20 semi-final. This was a strategic move, as Mamore had been left with only seven eligible players following the mass dismissals, making them technically unable to field a complete team for the return fixture. Consequently, Mamore automatically advanced to the final, while Uberlandia was relegated to competing for third place. Uberlandia cited their decision to forgo the second leg as an act of ‘Fair Play,’ emphasizing sportsmanship despite the previous turmoil.
