Neymar Jr. left the field in tears after Santos FC suffered a devastating 6-0 loss to Vasco Da Gama in the Brazilian league, describing it as the most humiliating defeat of his career.
This marked the first time Santos FC conceded six goals in the Brazilian Serie A, a significant low for the club, which boasts eight league titles. Despite having Neymar Jr. on their roster, Santos is currently struggling in the lower ranks of the league. Following the match, coach Cleber Xavier was promptly fired.
Vasco Da Gama midfielder Philippe Coutinho contributed two goals to the victory, helping his team secure their first win in six matches and their largest margin of victory in 17 years.
The crushing defeat left Neymar Jr. and the entire team deeply disappointed, with many fans protesting for immediate solutions. Neymar Jr. told journalists after the game, “I have never seen this before in my life. Unfortunately, I can’t help anything. I think everyone today should go home and sleep, thinking about what happened and what they want to do next.”
The 33-year-old Neymar Jr., famously the most expensive player in football history after his EUR 222 million transfer from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, recently returned to Santos FC. He rejoined the club after terminating his contract with Al Hilal due to frequent injuries. Since returning mid-season, Neymar has played 12 games, scoring six goals and assisting three.
