Neymar Jr. left the field in tears after Santos FC suffered a humiliating 6-0 defeat against Vasco da Gama in Brazil’s top league. This marked one of the most embarrassing failures of his career.
It was the first time in Santos FC’s history that they conceded six goals in a Brazilian top-flight (Serie A) match, making it a significant low point for Neymar Jr.
Santos FC, eight-time Brazilian champions, are struggling near the bottom of the table, just two points from safety, despite having Neymar Jr. on their squad. Following the crushing defeat, coach Cleber Xavier was fired within hours.
Vasco da Gama midfielder Philippe Coutinho, formerly of Liverpool and Aston Villa, scored two goals. His performance helped secure Vasco’s first victory in six matches and their biggest win in 17 years.
Neymar Jr.’s return has been met with strong disappointment for the team, with many fans protesting and demanding solutions from the club.
“I have never seen this before in my life. Unfortunately, I can’t help anything. I think everyone today should go home and sleep, thinking about what happened and what they want to do next,” Neymar Jr. told journalists after the match.
Neymar Jr., reported to be 33 years old, was involved in football’s most expensive transfer in 2017 when he moved from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain for EUR 222 million. He reportedly returned to Santos FC this new season after an injury-plagued stint led to him disconnecting his contract with Al Hilal. Playing for Santos FC through mid-season, Neymar has made 12 total appearances, contributing 6 assists.
