Marathon Icons Eliud Kipchoge and Sifan Hassan Set for Historic New York City Marathon Debut in 2025

Two of the most celebrated figures in long-distance running, Eliud Kipchoge, the former world record holder, and Sifan Hassan, a multi-medalist at the Paris Olympic Games, are officially set to make their highly anticipated debut at the New York City Marathon. This prestigious event, scheduled for November 2, 2025, will mark their inaugural appearances in the iconic race, according to a recent announcement from the New York Marathon organizers.

Sifan Hassan, the formidable Dutch athlete, has consistently demonstrated her extraordinary talent across various distances. She recently showcased her marathon prowess, achieving a remarkable victory by recording a time of 2:18:22 during a significant marathon event in August, which also coincided with its 25th anniversary. The 32-year-old, known for her versatility, also competed in the London Marathon, where she secured an impressive third-place finish with a time of 2:19:00.

Eliud Kipchoge, the 40-year-old Kenyan legend, is widely regarded as one of the greatest marathon runners of all time. His illustrious career includes Olympic gold medals in the marathon at both the Rio and Tokyo Games, cementing his status as a global icon. While he famously became the first person to break the two-hour barrier in an unofficial marathon event – a monumental feat that captivated the athletic world – he has not claimed a major marathon victory since his triumphant run in Berlin in 2022. Despite competing in numerous other city marathons worldwide, the New York City Marathon has remained a notable absence from his decorated career until this upcoming debut.

Beyond these two global superstars, the 2025 New York City Marathon field is expected to feature several other elite athletes, promising a highly competitive race. This includes the defending men’s champion, Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands, and Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui. Additionally, former champions Albert Korir and Evans Chebet, both esteemed runners from Kenya, are also anticipated to compete. The New York City Marathon continues to be one of the world’s largest and most popular marathons, with the 2024 edition drawing an impressive total of 55,644 runners.
