FC Barcelona will be unable to utilize their iconic Camp Nou stadium for upcoming matches, including a scheduled fixture against Real Sociedad. This decision comes after the Barcelona City Council rejected the club’s request to host games there, citing significant safety and security concerns related to the ongoing renovation work.
As a result, Barcelona will continue to play their home matches at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium in Montjuic. This temporary arrangement has been in place since the commencement of the 2023-24 season and is set to extend through the 2024-25 La Liga campaign, as the extensive refurbishment of Camp Nou progresses. The stadium renovations began approximately nine months ago.
Sebastia Massague, Barcelona’s Civil Security Manager, articulated the council’s position, stating, “We have found many points requiring more revised repair work, which could affect safety and security within the stadium.” This assessment highlights the scale of the necessary structural and operational adjustments still underway, which currently render the venue unsuitable for hosting large crowds.
FC Barcelona has issued a statement confirming their commitment to addressing these concerns. The club is reportedly working on a new proposal and revised plans designed to align with the stringent requirements set forth by the Barcelona City Council. The club has consistently expressed its strong desire to return to Camp Nou, which, even in its temporary configuration, was expected to accommodate up to 27,000 spectators during the renovation phase. However, the city’s rejection underscores the paramount importance of public safety.
The club has also utilized other facilities, such as the Johan Cruyff Stadium, which is typically home to FC Barcelona’s reserve team. Furthermore, concerns have been voiced regarding the playing surface at the temporary Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium, with some reports indicating issues with its quality. Despite these logistical and operational challenges, FC Barcelona plans to continue using the Lluis Companys venue for all its major fixtures, including an upcoming UEFA Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain.
