Cambodia Intensifies Global Outreach for Angkor Half Marathon, Targeting Increased Foreign Participation

Siem Reap, Cambodia — The National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC) and the Ministry of Tourism are strengthening their collaborative efforts to amplify global outreach for the prestigious Angkor International Half Marathon. This strategic partnership aims to significantly boost the number of foreign participants in the coming years, transforming the event into an even greater international draw.

This initiative follows the successful 30th edition of the Angkor International Half Marathon, which recently concluded near the iconic Angkor Wat temples. The event attracted a record-breaking total of approximately 16,000 runners, marking a significant milestone for the annual race.

Among the participants, over 3,600 international runners hailed from 86 different countries, demonstrating the marathon’s growing appeal on the global stage. Alongside them, more than 12,000 Cambodian runners also took part, embracing the opportunity for recreational activity and fitness amidst the stunning historical backdrop.

Mr. Wat Chamroeun, Secretary General of the NOCC, highlighted the unique appeal of the event. He noted that most participants are not professional athletes but individuals seeking a recreational experience, enjoying the blend of running, walking, and photography amidst the awe-inspiring heritage site. “Runners here are mostly not professionals; they come for enjoyment, walking, running, and taking photos, creating joy beyond just health goals,” Mr. Chamroeun stated.

He further emphasized that this recreational aspect, combined with the remarkable increase in participation for the 30th anniversary, serves as a crucial factor in attracting running enthusiasts from around the world to the Angkor heritage zone. “This is something we will maintain and enhance in subsequent years, especially through close cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism to further expand our educational and promotional efforts,” he added.

Mr. Chamroeun also underscored the invaluable role of nearly 4,000 international visitors who effectively act as direct ambassadors for Cambodian tourism. “These nearly 4,000 tourists from all directions are direct broadcasters, helping promote our tourism. This is a valuable asset through which we must increase our outreach and attract even more runners,” he remarked.

The Secretary General reiterated that the record participation for the 30th anniversary clearly demonstrates Cambodia’s stability, excellent security, and its suitability as a premier destination for runners globally to experience the unique thrill of competing within the magnificent Angkor Wat temple complex.
