The Cambodia Boxing Federation has announced a significant increase in participation for the upcoming National Boxing Championship 2025. Federation President Mr. Buy Sophoan confirmed that approximately 142 male and female athletes, including those from the youth development level, are set to compete, a notable rise compared to the 2024 edition. However, this positive development is tempered by the unfortunate absence of several registered boxers from border provinces, who have been displaced due to ongoing military actions in Cambodian territory.
The National Boxing Championship 2025 is scheduled to take place at the Sports Hall of the Royal University of Phnom Penh, running from December 23rd to 26th, 2025. President Sophoan detailed that the 142 participating athletes represent 23 different associations and clubs from across Cambodia. While initial registrations exceeded 200, many competitors residing in provinces along the Cambodian-Thai border were forced to withdraw. These regions have been particularly affected by recent military aggressions, leading to the displacement of residents, including these aspiring boxers.
“We have observed a significant increase in participation this year compared to the previous one,” stated President Sophoan. “However, Cambodia is currently experiencing challenges from military incursions, and roughly five of our provinces have been impacted. Boxers from these areas, who had planned to participate, unfortunately, had to withdraw due to displacement. Without this issue, we would have seen even greater numbers of participants.”
Despite these challenges, the Federation is actively working to enhance the championship experience and promote the sport’s growth. This year, the Cambodia Boxing Federation has introduced a new competition category for athletes under 16 years old. This initiative aims to cultivate and elevate the skill levels of young boxers from an early age. Furthermore, the Federation has opened the competition to foreign athletes, with one Japanese boxer already confirmed to participate. President Sophoan emphasized that this move is designed to boost the technical abilities and competitive experience of Cambodian boxers by allowing them to test their skills against international opponents. The Federation is also exploring opportunities to broaden foreign participation in future events.
Beyond the sporting aspect, the National Boxing Championship 2025 will also serve as a platform for a charitable fundraising drive. Proceeds from this initiative will be directed towards supporting soldiers actively defending the national territory against incursions, as well as providing aid to the displaced individuals affected by the ongoing conflict.
