Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has publicly indicated his plans to retire from professional football in the near future. The captain of the Portuguese national team and star forward for Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr made this emotional revelation during a recent interview, reflecting on his illustrious career and future aspirations.
In a candid discussion with Piers Morgan on ‘Piers Morgan Uncensored,’ Ronaldo addressed the topic of his impending retirement and the life that awaits him beyond the pitch. When directly asked about when he might consider hanging up his boots, the prolific striker, who is 40 years old and currently under contract with Al Nassr until 2027, responded simply yet poignantly: ‘It will be soon.’
The revelation was tinged with emotion, as Ronaldo admitted, ‘I think I am ready. Of course, it will be very difficult, very difficult for me. I will probably cry.’ However, he also conveyed a clear sense of preparedness, explaining that he began planning for his post-football life years ago. ‘But Piers, I have been preparing my future since I was 25, 26, 27. I have been preparing my future for over 10 years now. So, I think I will be able to cope with that pressure.’ This long-term foresight has instilled confidence in him regarding the transition away from the competitive sport.
Ronaldo expressed his desire to shift his focus to family and other interests outside the professional arena. ‘Life is not just about scoring goals,’ he stated. ‘Everything has a beginning, and everything has an end. I have other passions outside football. I will have a lot of time for myself, for my family, and to raise my children.’ He specifically mentioned his sons, Cristiano Junior, whose developmental years he wishes to oversee, and Mateo, who also shares a love for football. Ronaldo also shared his enjoyment for leisure activities like playing Padel with close friends, indicating a readiness for a more relaxed lifestyle.
Throughout his decorated career, which began with Sporting Lisbon in his native Portugal, Ronaldo has enjoyed unparalleled success at some of Europe’s biggest clubs. He left an indelible mark at Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner secured three Premier League titles and multiple UEFA Champions League trophies during his tenure at Manchester United. His time at Real Madrid saw him clinch La Liga and additional Champions League titles, while he also added a Serie A championship during his spell with Juventus. Ronaldo joined Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia’s Pro League in 2022, following his second spell at Manchester United.
Beyond his personal future, Ronaldo also shared his enduring affection and concern for Manchester United, the club where he first rose to global superstardom. ‘Manchester United will always be in my heart. I love this club very much,’ he affirmed. He did, however, express a frank assessment of their current state: ‘But we all have to be honest. Manchester United is not in a good situation right now. They need to change, and the change is not just about the coach and players, in my opinion.’
