Manchester City has confirmed the dismissal of a staff member following an incident during the recent Manchester Derby at the Etihad Stadium on September 14. The individual, employed in wine sales, was reportedly found wearing a Manchester United shirt while on duty, serving attendees during the crucial Premier League fixture.
The incident garnered significant attention after images of the staff member circulated on social media. A prominent fan account initially shared photographs of the employee in the black Manchester United kit, appearing to celebrate the Red Devils. The post, which quickly went viral, highlighted the perceived irony of a City staff member openly sporting rival colors during such a high-stakes match.
Responding to the widespread circulation and public queries, Manchester City’s official social media channels confirmed the club’s swift action. A statement from the club read, “Thank you for informing us of this. We can confirm that the personnel is now expelled from the job.”
While the club’s decision to dismiss the employee was decisive, it also sparked a considerable amount of debate and mixed reactions among fans and the wider public. Following the controversy, the original social media account that posted the images subsequently deleted them, and Manchester City has refrained from issuing any further official statements on the matter.
The match itself saw Manchester City dominate their cross-town rivals, securing a commanding 3-0 victory over Manchester United. Phil Foden opened the scoring for the hosts, followed by two goals from prolific striker Erling Haaland, sealing a comfortable win for Pep Guardiola’s side.
This victory earned Manchester City three crucial points. However, the club later experienced a dip in form, losing two subsequent matches. Currently, Pep Guardiola’s team has accumulated six points from their first four matches, placing them in the eighth position in the Premier League table. Conversely, Manchester United’s defeat saw them drop to 14th place, intensifying pressure on manager Ruben Amorim. Club leaders are reportedly seeking immediate improvements in results, and should the team fail to deliver strong performances in upcoming fixtures, Amorim’s position as manager could be at risk.
