The world football governing body, FIFA, has announced that it is closely and diligently monitoring the evolving situation in Iran. This heightened vigilance comes in the wake of recent military actions initiated by the United States, a co-host nation for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in 2026, against Iran, which has also successfully secured a coveted spot in the prestigious global tournament.
The Iranian national football team is notably scheduled to compete on American soil in June of the current year, adding another layer of sensitivity to the geopolitical landscape surrounding their participation.
Further compounding the situation, US President Donald Trump, who was reportedly awarded the FIFA Peace Prize in late 2025, made a significant announcement on February 28, 2026. He confirmed missile strikes against Iran, characterizing these actions as a crucial combat operation by the United States. The 47-year-old US President described the operation as a vital military maneuver for the nation.
Iran has successfully secured an automatic qualification spot for the final round of the 2026 World Cup, which is set to be jointly hosted across North America by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Their qualification was earned through the rigorous Asian Football Confederation (AFC) competitions.
Following the official World Cup draw, Iran has been placed in Group G. In this group, they are set to face strong European contender Belgium, along with New Zealand and Egypt. Significantly, all of Iran’s group stage matches are scheduled to take place within the United States, specifically with two initial matches planned for Los Angeles.
However, renewed attacks from Israel and subsequent US military operations targeting Iran have compelled FIFA to engage in heightened scrutiny and close monitoring of the evolving situation. The organization is prioritizing the safety and integrity of the tournament above all else.
According to FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom, the global football body convened immediate meetings to address the developments concerning Iran. He affirmed FIFA’s unwavering commitment to continuously monitor the situation with the utmost care and attention.
Secretary General Grafstrom explicitly stated, “We convened immediate meetings, and it is too early to provide detailed comments on this matter. However, we will continue to monitor the situation and issues around the world with the highest level of attention.”
Furthermore, Grafstrom provided strong assurance that FIFA would ensure maximum safety and security for all participating teams, including Iran, throughout the World Cup 2026 tournament.
He elaborated on FIFA’s commitment, saying, “We have already conducted the final draw in Washington, with representatives from each team in attendance. Our primary focus remains on ensuring the safety and security of all teams participating in the World Cup.” Grafstrom added, “We will maintain close communication and coordination with the governments of all three host nations, as is our standard practice, to address any issues that may arise. Everyone must be safe.”
It is important to note that the vibrant city of Los Angeles has been specifically designated to host two of Iran’s crucial group stage matches during the tournament, underscoring the logistical considerations involved in ensuring team safety amidst global events.
