FIFA President Infantino Renews Call to Lift Russia’s International Football Ban

On February 2, 2026, Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, reiterated his desire for Russia to return to international competition, asserting that the existing ban has failed to achieve its intended results.

Professional football clubs, alongside the Russian national team, have been barred from international matches by both FIFA and the European Football Association (UEFA) since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Infantino contended that the current prohibition had not accomplished its objectives, arguing instead that it merely fostered further frustration and disgust. He emphasized the potential positive impact of allowing Russian boys and girls to compete in football across Europe. Furthermore, he stated his belief that FIFA should refrain from banning any country from football competition due to the actions of its political leaders.

In stark contrast, Ukrainian Sports Minister Matvii Bidnyi strongly criticized Infantino’s remarks, branding them as irresponsible and akin to the opinions of young children. Bidnyi, also speaking to Sky Sports, powerfully argued that Russia had ‘broken football’ through the tragic reality of children being killed in the conflict.

It is worth noting that UEFA had previously attempted to ease its restrictions in 2023, granting permission for Russia’s U-17 teams to compete. However, this decision was subsequently revoked following significant opposition from its member federations.

Infantino has a history of expressing support for Russia’s return to international football. During a UEFA congress held in April of the previous year, he conveyed his wish to see Russia reintegrated, suggesting that such a move would signify that ‘everything is settled.’ This stance contrasts with that of UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin, who has consistently maintained that Russia would only be allowed to rejoin international competitions once the conflict in Ukraine has concluded.

UEFA is scheduled to convene an executive committee meeting later this month, where the authority to decide on Russia’s potential return to international tournaments will be a key discussion point. Currently, Russian teams remain restricted to participating solely in international friendly matches.
