The International Football Federation (FIFA) has officially announced a significant increase in prize money for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The organization has agreed to boost the total prize pool by a substantial 50% compared to the previous tournament, reflecting the expanded format and global appeal of football’s premier event.
For the 2026 edition, FIFA plans to finance an impressive total of $727 million. Out of this substantial reserve, approximately $655 million is earmarked specifically for distribution among the 48 national teams that will participate in the finals. The prize money will be allocated based on each team’s performance and ranking level achieved throughout the competition.
The champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup are set to receive a generous $50 million, a considerable sum that underscores the tournament’s prestige. The runner-up will also be handsomely rewarded with $33 million. Even teams that exit at the group stage will secure a significant payout, with each expected to earn around $9 million from the tournament. Additionally, teams that automatically qualify for the event will receive an extra $1.5 million.
This substantial increase marks a notable departure from the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar, which featured a total prize pool of just over $420 million for 32 teams. The 2026 tournament will make history as FIFA expands the competition to include 48 teams for the first time ever, a strategic move aimed at fostering greater global participation and development in football.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has highlighted this increase in prize money as a significant financial contribution to the football community worldwide. He emphasized that the boosted funds are intended to provide substantial support and resources to national federations and players across the globe.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to commence on June 11 and conclude on July 19, 2026. The opening day of the event will notably feature host nation Mexico playing against South Africa.
