Tehran, Iran – The Islamic Republic of Iran is unlikely to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to a definitive statement made by the country’s Minister of Sports and Youth, Ahmad Donyamali. The minister’s declaration, reported on March 11, 2026, by the BBC, cites a complex web of geopolitical tensions and domestic challenges as the primary reasons for the nation’s expected absence from the prestigious international football tournament.
Donyamali’s firm stance was further elaborated in an interview with the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) on March 10, 2026. He expressed deep concern over the safety and well-being of Iranian players, declaring that “because this corrupt government—referring to the American government—killed our leader, under no circumstances will we qualify for the World Cup.” The minister emphasized that conditions for participation were not conducive, highlighting recent conflicts. “In the past eight or nine months, two wars have been laid upon us, and thousands of our people were killed and afflicted with persecution. So we really cannot afford to participate.”
The decision stems from a period of heightened regional instability following reported attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel, which allegedly resulted in the death of top leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran responded to these actions by launching missiles and drones toward Israel and other nations housing U.S. military bases, further escalating the already tense situation.
Despite these developments, FIFA President Gianni Infantino reportedly stated on March 11, 2026, that U.S. President Donald Trump had welcomed Iran’s participation in the 2026 World Cup race. However, Donyamali’s announcement appears to override any previous discussions or invitations.
Under the initial 2026 FIFA World Cup schedule, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, Iran had been placed in Group G. The team was slated to face New Zealand on June 15 and Belgium on June 21, with both matches planned for Los Angeles, USA. A third group stage fixture against Egypt was scheduled for June 26 in Seattle, USA. Iran’s potential withdrawal would significantly impact the tournament’s Group G lineup and overall dynamics.
