Jose Mourinho, one of football’s most decorated managers, is reportedly on the cusp of a sensational return to SL Benfica, the very club where he began his illustrious managerial career 25 years ago. This potential move would mark a significant moment, bringing ‘The Special One’ back to his roots in Portuguese football.
The anticipated return comes as the Lisbon giants seek a new direction, with Mourinho expected to take the helm from current manager Bruno Lage. The pressure for change at Benfica intensified following a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Qarabag FK in a UEFA Champions League qualifier, a match where the Portuguese side famously squandered a two-goal lead.
Mourinho, 62, has openly confirmed reports from the Portuguese media, acknowledging that Benfica has indeed contacted him about the vacant managerial position and expressed a strong desire for his services. The former boss of European powerhouses such as FC Porto, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Inter Milan, has indicated his keen interest in the proposal.
Addressing the speculation, Mourinho was quoted stating: “What coach can deny the club Benfica? That’s not me, I agree, but I say, ‘Now I’m abroad and I really want to talk to Benfica and people there when I go back. I didn’t think much time to have the opportunity to lead Benfica, I was interested in the proposal.’”
Mourinho has been unattached since August, following his departure from Turkish club Fenerbahce. While he is expected to return to Portugal in the near future, reports suggest that Benfica has already secured his signature on a short-term contract, reportedly lasting for one season.
His initial spell at Benfica took place during the 2000-01 season. It was at this historic club that Mourinho first stepped into a senior managerial role, achieving notable successes and laying the groundwork for a career that would see him become one of the most recognizable figures in world football.
