Lionel Messi, the legendary captain of the Argentina national football team, has expressed his aspiration to compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be co-hosted across North America. Despite acknowledging the challenges that come with his advancing age, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner remains hopeful about participating in what would be a historic sixth World Cup tournament for him.
Currently 38 years old, Messi recognizes the potential impact of age on his performance as he aims to defend Argentina’s status as world champions. His continued commitment to professional football was recently underscored by signing a new contract with Major League Soccer club Inter Miami, which extends his tenure until 2028. This long-term agreement indicates that Messi has no immediate plans to retire, even as he approaches his 39th birthday in June 2026, the same year the global tournament will take place.
In a recent interview with NBC News, Messi openly discussed his ambitions and reservations. While expressing a strong desire to feature in the 2026 World Cup, he also voiced concerns regarding a possible decline in his physical form, the increased risk of injuries, and the natural process of aging. The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star emphasized that his decision would depend heavily on his physical condition leading up to the event.
“It would be wonderful to compete in the FIFA World Cup,” Messi stated during the interview. “I really like this, if possible, I want to be there to contribute significantly to my team. I will monitor my situation day by day, especially when I participate in pre-season friendlies with my club, Inter Miami. If I am 100% in good condition, I will be able to decide quickly.”
Messi underscored his profound desire to play in the 2026 World Cup, highlighting his role as part of the defending champions. He holds the distinction of being Argentina’s all-time leading goal scorer with 114 goals and also their most-capped player, having made 195 appearances for the national side. A potential appearance in the 2026 tournament would mark his sixth World Cup, a remarkable achievement in a professional career that spans over 21 years, having debuted at just 17 years old.
