Mohamed Salah, a prominent figure at Liverpool, has publicly criticized a section of the club’s fanbase for their online behavior, specifically targeting social media posts that he perceived as disrespectful towards former teammates Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez following their recent transfers.
The Egyptian international’s strong reaction was sparked by an image widely circulated on the social media platform X, originally posted by the account “Anfield Edition.” This particular post featured stark black-and-white images of Diaz and Nunez, juxtaposed against vibrant color photographs of potential new signings, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. The controversial image was accompanied by the caption: “This is the biggest improvement in football history.”
Salah expressed his anger and disappointment, directly responding to the sentiment. He questioned the nature of such celebrations, remarking, “How can we celebrate a great contract without respecting the players who helped us win the Premier League title as well?” His statement underscored a desire to protect and show solidarity with his former colleagues, Nunez and Diaz.
In response to Salah’s criticism, the “Anfield Edition” account issued an apology, clarifying their intent. They stated that the post was merely intended to highlight the potential for significant new contracts and was not meant to disrespect Luis Diaz or Darwin Nunez.
Diaz recently completed a transfer to Bayern Munich for a fee exceeding $87 million, while Nunez moved to Al Hilal in a deal worth over $60 million. The combined proceeds from these sales, totaling more than $156 million, are reportedly earmarked to fund potential high-profile acquisitions like Florian Wirtz, valued at over $156 million, and Alexander Isak, who could command upwards of $160 million.
During their time at Anfield, both forwards contributed to the team’s efforts. Luis Diaz played a crucial role, helping the team secure the League Cup, and recorded 13 goals and seven assists across 36 appearances in the preceding season. Darwin Nunez, however, experienced a dip in form, registering five goals in 30 games.
