Neymar Jr. left the field in tears after Santos FC suffered a humiliating 6-0 loss to Vasco Da Gama in Brazil’s top league. This defeat marks the most embarrassing failure of his career and for Santos FC, as it was the first time the club had conceded six goals in the Brazilian Top League (Serie A).
Santos FC, eight-time Brazilian champions, now sits in the distant relegation zone, just two points clear, despite having Neymar Jr. as a team member. Following the disastrous match, coach Cleber Xavier was immediately fired by the club within hours.
Vasco Da Gama midfielder Philippe Coutinho, a former player for Liverpool and Aston Villa, contributed two goals, helping his team secure their first victory in six matches and their largest win in 17 years.
The match resulted in strong disappointment for Neymar Jr. and the entire team, leading to protests from fans demanding solutions for the club.
“I have never seen this before in my life,” Neymar Jr. told journalists after the game. “Unfortunately, I can’t help anything. I think everyone today should go home and sleep, thinking about what happened today, and what they want to do next.”
The 33-year-old, known for his record €222 million transfer from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, returned to Santos FC this season. He rejoined the club after his contract with Al Hilal was terminated due to frequent injuries. Since his mid-season return to Santos FC, Neymar has made 12 appearances, providing 6 assists.
