Senegal Challenges CAF Decision at Sports Court After Being Stripped of African Championship Title, Morocco Declared Victor

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has officially lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). This decisive action comes after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) controversially stripped the Senegalese national team of their Africa Cup of Nations 2025 title, which they had initially held for two months, and subsequently awarded it to Morocco. This unprecedented ruling has sparked significant outrage and a fervent commitment from Senegal to defend their hard-won victory.

CAF announced its decision on March 17th, two months after the final match had concluded. The governing body cited a violation of AFCON competition regulations by Senegal, specifically that the Senegalese players walked off the field before the match officially ended. This drastic decision by African football’s governing body was prompted by a formal complaint from the Moroccan Football Federation, which called for a comprehensive investigation and review of the match.

While CAF’s ruling undoubtedly brought renewed joy and satisfaction to Morocco, the sentiment in Senegal was starkly different. Across the nation, fans, football officials, players, and coaching staff have reacted with strong indignation and unified condemnation of the decision to revoke their championship title. This widespread discontent highlights the emotional and national significance of the tournament victory.

In response to the contentious ruling, Mr. Abdoulaye Fall, President of the Senegalese Football Federation, recently confirmed that the federation has engaged legal counsel to prepare and submit the appeal to CAS. His statements underscore Senegal’s unwavering determination to seek justice and uphold the integrity of their triumph on the field.

During a press conference, President Fall articulated the federation’s firm stance: “Senegal will maintain its position and vigorously defend the victory achieved on the playing field, a victory born from the talent and dedication of all our gifted players. We have instructed our lawyers to meticulously prepare and submit our appeal, initiating legal proceedings before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to protect our rightful win.”

The controversy stems from the dramatic African continental final, held in Rabat on January 18, 2026. The match descended into disarray in the 90+8 minute when the referee awarded a penalty kick to the host nation, Morocco, just moments before the final whistle. In protest of this decision, the Senegalese players collectively walked off the pitch.

Despite the initial walk-off, the Senegalese players eventually returned to the field, largely due to the impassioned encouragement and insistence of national team captain Sadio Mane, a prominent figure and former player for Liverpool. Following their return, Pape Gueye managed to score a crucial goal in a late comeback, sealing a 1-0 victory for Senegal over Morocco on the field.

Nevertheless, CAF ultimately overturned the on-field result. After reviewing Morocco’s complaint and concluding that Senegal had indeed violated competition regulations by abandoning the pitch, CAF awarded the match to Morocco with a 3-0 scoreline. This ruling marks a historic and unprecedented event in football, as Senegal becomes the first national team in the sport’s history to be stripped of a championship title after winning it on the field.
