The UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first legs delivered a series of dramatic encounters, resulting in mixed fortunes for the English contingent. While Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur both suffered defeats, Newcastle United managed to secure a crucial draw against Barcelona.
On the night of March 10th, the first leg at Rams Park saw Liverpool fall to a 1-0 defeat against Galatasaray of the Turkish Premier League. Mario Lemina scored the decisive goal, putting the Turkish side ahead in their tie.
Tottenham Hotspur also faced a challenging fixture, becoming the second English team to lose their first leg match. They were comprehensively beaten 5-2 by Atlético Madrid at the Riyadh Air Stadium Metropolitano. Atlético’s dominance was evident with goals from Julian Alvarez, Marcos Llorente, Antoine Griezmann, and Robin Le Normand, each finding the back of the net. Pedro Porro and Dominic Solanke managed to score two goals for Spurs in response, but it was not enough to prevent a significant loss.
Among the three English teams participating in these specific fixtures, only Newcastle United avoided defeat, earning a 1-1 draw against Barcelona at St. James’ Park. Harvey Barnes initially put Newcastle ahead in the 86th minute. However, Barcelona salvaged a point deep into injury time, with Lamine Yamal converting a penalty kick in the 90th minute plus six seconds.
Elsewhere in the competition, German powerhouse Bayern Munich showcased their attacking prowess by securing a commanding 6-1 victory over Italian side Atalanta in their first leg encounter.
This particular round of 16 features an unusually high number of English teams, with six clubs vying for a place in the quarter-finals. In addition to Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United, Arsenal, Manchester City, and Chelsea are also competing. Arsenal is set to travel to Leverkusen, while Real Madrid will host Manchester City. Chelsea is slated to visit Paris to face PSG. Another upcoming fixture on March 11th will see Bodo/Glimt take on Sporting.
