Former WBC champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has been deported by US authorities to Mexico to face charges related to drug smuggling and trafficking, according to a statement. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed Chavez Jr.’s deportation, adding that Mexican authorities also have an active arrest warrant for the former boxer.
Mexican prosecutors accuse the 39-year-old boxer of drug trafficking and human trafficking. The country’s prosecutor is actively pursuing this major case. US immigration authorities arrested Chavez Jr. on June 28th, following a loss to social media star Jake Paul. US authorities found issues with his passport, alleging involvement in illegal activities and foreign terrorist connections. Mexican prosecutors accuse the former WBC champion of being a major drug criminal connected to the Sinaloa Cartel, a group the US government is expected to officially designate as a foreign terrorist organization in early 2025. Chavez Jr.’s lawyers and family have denied all allegations.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. won the WBC middleweight world title in 2011 but lost it the following year. The 39-year-old boxer has a history of scandal, including testing positive for banned substances in 2009, resulting in penalties. He faced another suspension from his boxing career in 2013 after testing positive again.
