Vazquez Joins Leverkusen After 10 Years at Real Madrid

Bayer Leverkusen has signed right-back Lucas Vazquez on a two-year contract. Vazquez, a five-time UEFA Champions League winner, departs Spanish giants Real Madrid after a decade.

Set to turn 34, Vazquez’s contract at Real Madrid was expiring. He leaves the club having won a record 23 titles. His two-year deal with Leverkusen extends until June 30, 2027, and he will wear the number 21 jersey.

Leverkusen’s managing director, Simon Rolfes, praised the signing: ‘We’ve brought in an experienced player, a man who has won five Champions League titles with Real Madrid over the last decade. He possesses special technical abilities and strong qualities that will contribute significantly to our team. Vazquez will be a powerful addition.’

Last season, Leverkusen played in the Bundesliga under Xabi Alonso’s leadership, before the Spanish manager moved to direct Real Madrid this season. The current 2023-24 Bundesliga champions are now directed by former Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag. The German top-tier team was disappointed last week after losing 2-1 to Hoffenheim.
